from DYSTOPIA to UTOPIA
With the works by Ben Schütze, Sabine Suckrau and Horst Wagner
The situation today evokes a variety of reflections on social order and lets people concern about a possible negative aftermath. The radical perception of the current time easily turns into an irrational fear; Likewise the potential aftermath turns into an apocalyptic endgame. “Fear Eats the Soul”.
Whereas the dystopia places us directly in a depressing reality, the utopia takes us into a future and serves to criticize the present. However, in a utopian conception one should not rule out the difficult reality and should not plan to escape into a fictitious non-place, because otherwise this utopia, like dystopia, is built up out of fear and can only remain unreachable beyond reality. Contrary to the passion of fear, the utopia should be based on the passion of hope. One should recognize the current symptoms in the here and now and treat them with one’s sensible imagination in order to design a realizable future. Imagination is also the fortune of the artists which has been legitimized since Renaissance. This gives the artists the ability to bring their creative perspectives into worldview and to beautify the world of appearances on the canvas. They discover the back of the coin and create their own ideal-place from the dystopian remains.
The group exhibition “from Dystopia to Utopia”, shows the works from three German artists, Ben Schütze, Sabine Suckrau and Horst Wagner. With their brush, the artists develop imaginative art worlds of three different types. With her symbolic imagery and soothing coloring, artist Sabine Suckrau expresses a reflective way of thinking about the crisis. Ben Schütze discovers a musical scale of inner joy from the colors of worn materials. In Horst Wagner’s pictures, the future-oriented outlook of the young generation sprouts from the dark, social-critical ground.
The exhibition will open on August 23, 2020 at 7 p.m. at Pashmin Art Gallery Hamburg (Gotenstraße 21, 20097 Hamburg | Entrance at Wandalenweg). All three artists, Ben Schütze, Sabine Suckrau and Horst Wagner, will be present at the opening. The exhibition can be seen until 22.09.2020.
